Abstract
Significance Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who yesterday unveiled a seasonal tax holiday as his government prepares for next year’s elections, is attempting to ready Canada, the United States's largest trading partner, for turbulent political and economic relations with Washington in 2025 and beyond. Impacts Yesterday’s diverging responses to ICC arrest warrants for Israeli leaders foreshadow policy differences between Ottawa and Washington. Trump’s protectionism and subsidies for US industries, including corporate tax cuts, will negatively impact Canada’s economy. Increased US hydrocarbon production under Trump may reduce opportunities to expand Canada’s own oil and gas sectors. New defence spending will give some help to Canada’s industrial sector, notably in Quebec, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Ontario.
