Knives and Femininity on the Early Modern Stage

Abstract
Abstract: This article argues that knives materialize femininity on the early modern stage. It examines Alice Arden’s knife in Arden of Faversham , Susan Thorney’s knife in The Witch of Edmonton , and Susan Mountford’s knife in A Woman Killed with Kindness as stage properties and material objects, to ask how they are brought onto the stage, and what they can tell us about the characters who wield them and the historical and dramatic contexts to which they belong. My aim is to nuance the critical commonplace that weapons are associated with masculinity, and to show that knives allow both female characters to actively perform femininity and boy actors to perform complex female roles.
