“My tender heart and everything about me”: Gender similarities in accounts of health problems and symptoms prior to coronary angiography

Abstract
The British Hart Foundation recently announced that “Britain”s number one ladykiller isn”t a man”, highlighting the fact that coronary heart disease is responsible for deaths in one in four women. However, women with heart disease have been found to be less likely to undergo medical investigations and their symptoms are more likely to be described as “atypical”. This paper outlines accounts from 200 patients from a major cardiothoracic centre in London, who described the symptoms and health problems that led to their angiograms. Thematic content and discourse analysis revealed accounts relating to physical and emotional symptoms and attributions of illness. The paper questions differences in patient treatment, given that descriptions given by male and female patients in this study were remarkably similar .
