À la fin des années 1970, dans un contexte de dictature et de grande pauvreté en milieu rural en Haïti, les réalisateurs canadiens Gérald et Paule Belkin mettent en œuvre un projet de “vidéocommunication” qui vise à éclairer la crise agraire haïtienne. Celui-ci prend place dans une petite région du pays où a débuté depuis quelques années un projet de développement rural conduit pas la coopération française. Cet article analyse la démarche audiovisuelle mise en œuvre par les Belkin et son articulation avec ce projet de développement autour de l’étroite implication des paysans de la région. Si le projet de développement agricole de Salagnac a permis et facilité la réalisation du travail des Belkin, ce dernier a donné une portée plus large aux paroles des paysans et aux réflexions conduites sur le développement et la crise agraire de la région. La démarche audiovisuelle des Belkin compte de plus parmi les pionnières, dès les années 1980, de celles qui relèvent d’une communication plus horizontale, impliquant les communautés rurales paysannes.
