Abstract
In the period before World War I, the German Social Democratic Party was viewed as a model by socialists throughout the world, and by the socialist women’s movement as well. German socialist feminist theory predicated women’s emancipation upon their entry into the proletarian work force and their participation in socialist revolution. However, although some socialist leaders firmly believed in equality for women, German socialists in and outside the Free Union movement were, as Jean Quataert has remarked, ‘reluctant feminists’. They missed a striking number of opportunities to work constructively for the equality for women in which they fervently believed. Moreover women remained subordinate and largely unheard in both the Party and the unions.
