On the Memory of Birds: A Meditation on Memory and Mourning AIDS Deaths in South Africa

Abstract
Using the qualitative methodology of lyric inquiry, this piece puts into conversation literary works, memory studies scholarship and other theoretical works presented in poetic form in what becomes both a meditation on and a lament for the millions of AIDS deaths in South Africa. It is an attempt to explore, witness and testify in an embodied and intimate way, embracing the ambiguities allowed for in lyric inquiry. Following the introduction, the main body of the work attempts to demonstrate and mirror in text the often broken, interrupted and incomplete nature of grief and memory. It is imperfect, wounded, and perhaps leaves the reader with more questions than answers, which is my intent.
