Abstract
À partir des années 1840, des folkloristes s’attachent à documenter et diffuser les chansons françaises de l’ancien Pays des Illinois, ex-province de la Nouvelle-France située dans la vallée centrale du Mississippi. Cet article retrace le parcours de ces savants et vise à mettre en évidence leur impact sur les pratiques locales et les représentations qu’ils projettent sur les « Francos » des Illinois. Plusieurs profils et approches en émergent : des érudits de la bourgeoise franco-américaine locale cherchant, dans une veine mémorialiste, à mettre en valeur la légitimité historique de leurs ancêtres, aux folkloristes anglo-américains régionalistes s’attachant à construire une identité culturelle propre au Centre-Ouest, jusqu’à l’émergence, chez un folkloriste franco-ontarien, du souci de situer les « Francos » des Illinois dans le cadre plus global de l’Amérique française.
