Abstract
Le Club Appalaches est un club privé de chasse et de pêche incorporé en 1910 mais dont les origines remontent à la fin du xix e siècle. Situé dans la Mrc des Basques sur le territoire de l’ancienne Seigneurie Rioux de Trois-Pistoles, il a été fondé par des sportifs en majorité issus de la bourgeoisie francophone de Sherbrooke et des environs. En cela, il se distingue des clubs de la première vague formés par des magnats anglophones de Montréal et des États-Unis. Ayant survécu au grand déclubage de 1977 il a, à travers les dédales de longues procédures judiciaires, conservé ses droits exclusifs de chasse et de pêche. En cela également, il se distingue des anciens clubs privés transformés en Zecs (zones d’exploitation contrôlée). Véritable marqueur d’une culture, le Club Appalaches constitue un phénomène qui a valeur de symbole sur le plan ethnohistorique. L’étude repose principalement sur un fonds privé constitué de registres, de notes, de cartes et de photographies d’époque, de même que sur le témoignage d’informateurs.
