Abstract
L’Encyclopédie canadienne (1842) souligne l’importance des peintres d’enseignes entre 1820 et 1860, essentiels à la ville moderne, mais souvent négligés. La pratique de la peinture d’enseignes, remontant au Moyen Âge et évoluant jusqu’au xix e siècle, a joué un rôle crucial dans la communication visuelle urbaine. Reconnu comme un artisan qualifié, le peintre d’enseignes devait acquérir des compétences artistiques élevées, le distinguant du simple peintre en bâtiment. La transmission des connaissances se faisait de maître à apprenti, souvent au sein des familles à Montréal et Québec. Bien que ce travail ne soit pas revendiqué comme un art, il exigeait des techniques complexes, telles que la dorure et l’imitation de textures. Cet article vise à éclairer l’histoire des peintres d’enseignes, que nous considérons comme les précurseurs des arts appliqués au Québec.
