Abstract
Abstract Tunnel devices take advantage of the wave‐like properties of charge carriers in implementing a desired function. The term tunneling refers to the movement of matter from one side of an energetic barrier to the other even though it does not possess sufficient energy to overcome the potential barrier according to the laws of classical mechanics. Instead, the quantum‐mechanical wave function of the particle penetrates inside the barrier and extends into the medium on the far side. Tunnel devices typically possess nonlinear, nonmonotonic current‐voltage characteristics and are characterized by very rapid fundamental propagation times. They find application in such diverse areas as microwave oscillators; multiple‐level logic, switches, memory elements; and lasers.
