Abstract
This article examines Swiss-German theatre maker Milo Rau’s work at Nederlands Toneel Gent (NTG) and looks at Rau’s work as director and artistic director through the frame of institutional dramaturgy, migratory aesthetics, and postmigrant theatre. It first engages with Rau’s institutional critique of German public theatres by positioning the Flemish theatre as distinct from its German counterpart and exploring preceding institutional innovations in the region. It continues to situate Rau’s innovations among those instigated in Germany by artistic directors, and these innovations as part of a larger institutional debate tied up with questions of diversifying and opening public theatres. Finally, considering Rau’s institutional migratory aesthetics, this article looks at the intercultural interlocutors of Orestes in Mosul (2019) and Antigone in the Amazon (2023) and their relation to issues of diversity, inclusion, and integration.
