Cet article vise, à partir d’un récit à la première personne de ma propre expérience de terrain − en tant que jeune femme et doctorante en géographie à l’époque – auprès des Wayúu, peuple autochtone matrilinéaire, au Venezuela (2011-2013), à interroger les conditions temporelles, épistémiques et méthodologiques qui orientent les chercheur·e·s et façonnent la recherche. Plus précisément, il défend l’idée que l’ensemble des temps susceptibles de composer une recherche − temps de définition de l’objet d’étude, d’accès au terrain, des Autres sur le terrain, temps « morts » et temps d’attentes, des « bricolages » méthodologiques, des allers-retours, de la réflexivité, des doutes, de la restitution − participent à produire des savoirs scientifiques. Ces temps, plus ou moins longs et contraignants pour les chercheur·e·s se mêlent sans conteste à leur trajectoire personnelle et à leur subjectivité qui influencent, en retour, la manière dont ils/elles vivent, pensent ou interprètent le terrain. De même, ils/elles peuvent être affecté·e·s par une pluralité de facteurs extérieurs relatifs aux contextes et aux conditions dans lesquels leur recherche se déploie (géopolitiques, socioculturels, linguistiques, sensibilité du sujet étudié), ainsi que par les attentes et les injonctions du système académique qui s’accommode parfois mal aux temps de l’enquête. Dès lors, comment raconter les coulisses et les expériences des temporalités du terrain – souvent passées sous silence – qui imprègnent inévitablement les résultats de recherche ?
