Abstract
Cet essai examine le traitement de la melindrosa ou Nouvelle Femme et de la race dans les tableaux de l’artiste impressionniste brésilienne Georgina de Albuquerque (1885-1962). En explorant sa technique impressionniste, nous offrons un aperçu important des limites et des avantages de ce style. Nous contestons les premières impressions de certains historiens et historiennes de l’art qui présentent Albuquerque comme conservatrice et réactionnaire. En réalité, elle a produit des oeuvres dont le potentiel artistique radical surpasse même celui de certains et certaines de ses contemporains de l’avant-garde moderniste brésilienne, dont Tarsila do Amaral et Candido Portinari.
