La résistance de Freud à l’égard de la musique est bien connue et le distingue de collègues analystes comme Theodor Reik, qui maintenait pour sa part une attitude d’ouverture et de sensibilité. Dans cet article, l’auteur examine divers témoignages permettant de documenter les positions de Freud, notamment son analyse du « pouvoir obscur » de la musique. En relisant ces témoignages à travers la critique de Reik, il propose quelques éléments d’interprétation susceptibles d’éclairer plusieurs raisons inconscientes de cette aversion particulière de Freud qui se disait lui-même « entièrement non musical », raisons qui ont à voir avec sa conception relative à la communauté. L’auteur montrera notamment que l’on trouve dans les thèses de son anthropologie religieuse ( Totem et Tabou , L’Homme Moïse , L’avenir d’une illusion ) plusieurs échos de cette conception de la communauté dont la musique serait l’expression emblématique, et l’espace symbolique symétrique de l’inconscient : lieu de traces, dépôt des signifiants originaires, antichambre dramatique du langage et du sujet.
