Abstract
Artifacts discovered in Transylvania attest to the fact that gold mining and processing began here 6,000 years ago. The Dacians took over the craft from the Thracians, the peremptory proof being the multitude of treasures kept in about 40 museums and collections in Romania and abroad. It is estimated that in the pre-Roman period the Dacians extracted about 200 tons of gold, mostly from alluvium, but also from the underground, as shown by the C14 dating of some fragments of wooden supports in the old mining works at Roșia Montană.
