Abstract
This is one of the most diverse protist groups by morphology if not by species composition. The Opalozoa are phagotrophic bacterivore , many in endosymbiotic associations with animals. The Sagenista include many saprotrophic groups on large algae or decomposing organic matter in marine habitats , or animal dung. The Gyrista include many genera that are important agricultural pathogens, called oomycetes . They are studied to understand how to mitigate devastating crop pathogen outbreaks, like the Irish potato famine. The remaining groups are photosynthetic, and commonly known as the brown algae. Microscopic to large macrophytes of a few meters, the brown algae are extremely diverse. Some like the diatoms are very important in aquatic systems, contributing to photosynthesis in the phytoplankton . Diatoms form silica (glass) shells and therefore are important in ocean silicon cycling, because of their abundance in algal blooms.
