These groups are important in soil ecology , marine ecology , and marine sediment ecology. The Cercozoa are one of the most diverse groups in the soil, consuming bacteria. Phaeodarea and Radiolarian form complex mineral skeletons and are important contributors in the marine plankton. The Imbricatea are important in soil silica biogeochemistry . The Endomyxa include parasites of invertebrates, and of plants, such as the club-root disease of Brassicae (which contain many of our vegetables and oil crops). The foraminifera are important in marine sediments ecology. They are also important to the oil industry because their fossil record in rock strata is used to date the rock layers.
