Abstract
These amoeboid organisms are mostly phagotrophic on bacteria or other protists . Many have a swimming life cycle stage with a cilium. They are important in soil ecology , marine sinking particles, and water surface ecology. They include organisms known as slime molds , such as Physarum and Dictyostelium . Some are studied because they have lost part of their mitochondria biochemistry and are adapted to anaerobic environments. Some genera are important in medicine because they cause blindness/death from dirty contact lenses, and cause most children diarrheas in developing countries.
