The group consist of the red algae, the green algae , and the ancestors to plants. The photosynthetic plastid is derived form an ancient endosymbiosis with Cyanobacteria. There are a diversity of photosynthetic pigments in this group, reflecting their diverse ecological adaptations. The life cycle of some red algae is particular with three stages instead of the usual haploid–diploid alternation of life stages. Some red algae have lost photosynthesis and are parasitic on other red algae. Both the red and green algae are important in the ecology of marine and freshwater environments. As photosynthesizers, they form the base of the food webs in many environments.
