Abstract
Photosynthesis and primary plastids . Primary plastids are derived from an endosymbiosis with a cyanobacterium , and form the Archaeplastida (red algae, green algae , plants). The phycobilisomes in the red algae become the green photosystems. Paulinella is an example of a young primary plastid acquisition from a cyanobacterium . It is a considered an evolutionary transition in process. It has been useful to understand the biochemical challenges when incorporating a photosynthetic biochemistry . It required adjusting to oxygen toxicity , evolving photosynthetic pigments , and a considerable amount of lateral gene transfers.
