Abstract
At its simplest, one cell cycle comprises a doubling of cell size through growth and ends with a division into two equivalent sibling cells. There are many variations from this basic model across protists . The period of growth preceding division must replicate organelles so that each sibling cell receives one half of the organelles and cytoplasm at cytokinesis. This imposes a necessary chronology to steps that must be completed before others begin. For example, chromosomes must be replicated before they are separated, or the cytostome must be replicated and correctly positioned before cytokinesis. There are checkpoints or control points identified during the cell cycle progression that verify completion of one step enabling the start of the next. These are molecular switches that involve multiple steps (verification of completion of one step, inactivation of proteins involved in the previous step, activation of proteins involved in the next steps). The molecular switches also coordinate the various independent replications of organelles, so that subsequent steps begin only after all preceding organelle replications are completed. Historically, cell cycle progression mutants were used to establish the sequence of steps, to identify a conceptual understanding of the control points, and eventually to identify genes and proteins and their molecular interactions .
