Abstract
Complementary mating types produce mating pairs that conjugate to produce a zygote . There is considerable selection for sameness for 2 cells to recognize each other as compatible for sex. There are many variations on the details of meiosis that lead to a diploid set of chromosomes in the nucleus. There are similarities between the mating type locus and mating type genes across clades. In some clades, there are only two mating types, whereas others might have hundreds. The more mating types, the less likely closely related individuals will encounter to mate. In some clades, there are morphologically distinct individuals between the male donor and female recipient haploid. Some clades also have morphological differences between the diploid and haploid individuals. Models and experiments indicate that sexuality or asexuality both have ecological advantages. The story behind maintaining or losing mating types and sexuality is not clear-cut.
