Le présent article brosse le portrait du projet Awikhiganisaskak, une collaboration entre la nation abénakise, une des onze nations autochtones du Québec, et quelques chercheurs associés à l’Université de Sherbrooke. Se voulant une initiative pour la valorisation de la documentation des langues et cultures autochtones, la première phase du projet s’est surtout attardée à la langue abénakise, une des langues de la famille linguistique algonquienne. Face au déclin rapide des langues autochtones au cours du XXe siècle, l’abénakis n’y échappant pas, diverses initiatives de préservation ont été tentées par la nation, principalement à travers l’enseignement de la langue. Le projet présenté s’est surtout concentré sur la cueillette et le traitement de la documentation écrite et orale en lien avec la langue. Deux exemples du travail effectué par le projet Awikhiganisaskak sont abordés dans l’article : dans un premier temps, l’étude de la traduction en français-abénakis d’un ouvrage anglais-abénakis intitulé New Familiar Abenakis and English Dialogues, de Joseph Laurent (1884) et la création d’un enregistrement sonore de l’ouvrage lu par des locuteurs de la langue; dans un deuxième temps, l’étude de la transcription, traduction en anglais et enregistrement oral du dictionnaire français-abénakis de Joseph Aubéry (1715) par Étienne (Stephen) Laurent, fils de Joseph Laurent. Enfin, un des intérêts de recherche du projet porte sur la traduction depuis et vers des langues autochtones et tente de documenter les multiples facettes du phénomène.
