Abstract
My childhood experience visiting the Toronto Children's Hospital to support a family member sparked an interest in advocating for physical and socially supportive environments within hospitals.This research acknowledges that environments facilitate healing in hospitals, often structured by codes and pragmatic principles that limit holistic approaches to care.The thesis aims to expand the notion of care in children's hospitals by considering the condition of patients, their social support network, caregivers, and the environment.It investigates three distinct areas: spaces that foster playfulness and mindfulness for children's health; environments that embrace 'moments of pause' for families and nurses, enabling active participation in children's healing without spatial stressors; and a regenerative design approach that promotes care beyond the human world and focuses on environmental well-being.The Toronto Children's Hospital is a case study proposing a series of interventions, including its renaming, to imagine a holistic approach to care through design.
