result, in part, of misunderstanding the cause of dyspnea in this group.Dyspnea in these patients is nearly always dominated by air hunger, and prescribed ventilator settings do not necessarily eliminate air hunger.Clinicians want to eliminate suffering, but to do so effectively, they need to know the target of palliative therapies.We are confident that when clinicians understand the target, they will find ways to hit it.A prominent physician wrote in 1926, "tachypnea, hyperpnea and cyanosis are attendant phenomena , but the feeling of air hunger is what alarms the patient. The physician is called for a single reason and that is to relieve air hunger" (16).Jubran and colleagues provide more data to support that statement.
