Abstract
Given that SSA occurs within the family system, unique family dynamics and environmental differences may exist between brothers who have committed SSA and brothers who have committed sexual abuse against an unrelated female.The objective of this thematic analysis was to investigate the family environment and life circumstances of brothers who committed SSA (n = 7) compared to brothers who committed sexual abuse against an unrelated female (n = 6).Five parent interviews (n = 3 parents of adolescents who committed SSA and n = 2 parents of adolescents who committed sexual abuse against un unrelated female) were included.Four themes were identified: Family-System Functioning (poorer for SSA families), Non-Normative Sexual Cultures (poorer for SSA families), Families Perception of Personal Victimization (poorer for SSA families), and an Environment of Convenience Surrounding the Abuse (groups converged).This research highlights that family dynamics are a key target for the prevention of SSA.
