Abstract
Abstract The eukaryotic parasites of medical importance are classically known as protozoan, arthropod, and helminthic parasites; the last includes nematodes, cestodes, trematodes, and acanthocephalans. The modern classification of biological species intends to reflect an evolutionary history of living organisms. Eukaryotes are divided into five monophyletic lineages called supergroups, of which four include human parasites: SAR, Excavata, Amoebozoa, and Opisthokonta. These supergroups replace the previous kingdoms that encompassed the eukaryotes. The chapter outlines basic characters of the parasitic protists by clade and the state of their classification at the level of family and genus. Species are identified by sequencing of the 18S small rRNA gene regions and phylogenetic analysis, and the species identification is verified against reference sequences. Modern specimen analysis is discovering new opportunistic pathogens related to known pathogenic groups, but others unrelated to known pathogenic genera will continue to be encountered.
