It is now over 50 years since the disease Q fever and its agent were discovered, yet effective control of the infection in man and animals has not been achieved despite numerous epidemiological and epizootiological investigations. Q fever is recognized as a worldwide problem, 12 and since the active exploratory decades following World War II, changes have occurred in the prevalence of the infection in several geographic areas: in traditional endemic areas, such as the Balkans and southern Europe, the prevalence of human Q fever has declined; in other countries, such as the Netherlands 56 and Canada, 25 , 44 both for a long time believed to be little affected by coxiellosis, Q fever in humans has been found on an endemic scale and its source thought to be enzootically infected dairy cattle.
