Abstract
Isabelle Eberhardt a incarné son statut de transfuge en Algérie de façon ambiguë. Elle revendique une posture intellectuelle nomade dont l’ambivalence identitaire manifeste et volontaire est le reflet. Le regard qu’elle porte sur ses consœurs algériennes et européennes, échappe aux normes de son époque et à l’horizon d’attente actuel qui voudrait en faire une figure féministe. D’une part, elle méprise la féminité occidentale étriquée et mondaine, et de l’autre, son costume masculin la prive d’un accès aux milieux féminins en Algérie, rendant leur présence moindre dans le paysage social qu’elle décrit. Néanmoins, les portraits de figures féminines marginales sont légion dans ses écrits et une finesse et une tendresse caractéristiques en émanent, malgré qu’ils ne soient pas toujours délivrés des clichés orientaux et de certains propos racistes et sexistes. Difficile donc de la considérer comme modèle d’émancipation féminine sans prendre en compte ces nuances. Notons cependant que certaines autrices du corpus algérien évoquent la figure d’Eberhardt dans le cadre d’une filiation intellectuelle nomade, relevant ainsi la part de complexité et d’opacité dans ses œuvres et sa pensée, ce qui fait parfois défaut, notamment dans les lectures biographiques qui ont souvent limité sa réception critique.
