Abstract
The Role of Medical Doctors in Political Advocacy Across the Globe Medical doctors worldwide often find themselves at the intersection of health and human rights, transcending their traditional clinical roles to become advocates for political change.These efforts extend beyond humanitarian aid, touching on the deep political issues that shape societies and affect the health of populations.The central question is whether medical professionals should engage in political advocacy, and if so, how to navigate these complex and divisive landscapes.Historically, medical professionals have been champions of humanitarian causes, but their involvement in political advocacy goes beyond charity work.In South Africa, the legacy of Dr Steve Biko, a prominent antiapartheid activist and physician, exemplifies the courage of the medical community in confronting social and political injustices.Biko's advocacy for Black Consciousness was not only a social movement but a political one aimed at dismantling institutionalized racial inequality.His commitment to this cause blurred the lines between healthcare and political activism, challenging the medical community to address the broader societal forces that oppressed populations. 1 Similarly, the tragic death of Dr Neil Aggett, a physician and trade unionist, in police detention during apartheid, highlights the intersection of healthcare, activism, and politics.Aggett's death, memorialized in Johnny Clegg's iconic song Asimbonanga, became a symbol of the brutal repression faced by activists in South Africa. 2 The song also honors Nelson Mandela, who was labeled a "terrorist" by the apartheid regime and the U.S. government.Despite this label, Mandela later became one of the most revered figures of the 20th century, symbolizing global human rights.Astonishingly, Mandela remained on the U.S. terrorist watch list until 2008, long after becoming South Africa's first Black president and an international icon.3 The global scope of medical advocacy is further reflected in the work of Dr Paul Farmer, whose commitment to providing healthcare for marginalized populations laid the foundation for modern global health equity movements.Through Partners in Health, Farmer's work in Haiti emphasized that healthcare is not merely about service delivery but about addressing the political, economic, and social systems that perpetuate inequality.His belief that "the idea that some lives matter less is the root
