Abstract
The SC Valerianum quoted by Josephus in AJ 14.145-8a is dated in § 148b to the ninth year of the Jewish high priest, Hyrcanus. This has often been assumed to be an archival fragment that had become attached to the SC Valerianum. I argue that § 148b is not archival: it is unlike any surviving archival material but typical of the way Josephus uses dates elsewhere. The date itself should be emended in light of Josephus’ usage and understanding of the chronology.
