Land Agency and the Animacy of Stories in Danis Goulet's and Amanda Strong's Short Films
Bibliographic record
Abstract
Vanessa Watts (Mohawk/Anishinaabe) draws attention to how the Indigenous concept of Place-Thought considers land as inherently agential and animate. Métis scholar Warren Cariou further argues that the land communicates through stories. These stories, or, for Cariou, Terristories, assert that agency is not limited to humans or nonhuman animals. Reading Cree/Métis filmmaker Danis Goulet’s short film Wakening as an example of Place-Thought reveals how the film’s depiction of a post-apocalyptic city can be a site for the reclamation of Terristory—in which “the deep past” and “the foreseen future” are part of “an ongoing relationship” in which colonialism is a “temporary rather than [a] permanent reality” (Cariou). The reading of Cree/Michif filmmaker Amanda Strong’s 2018 stop-motion film Biidaaban (The Dawn Comes) takes up the question of Place-Thought and Terristory, and further illustrates these concepts, emphasizing the (sub)urban contexts of the film. This chapter argues that the agency of the land, and the ability to communicate with it and have it choose to communicate as well, may be muted within settler-colonial habitats, but is nonetheless still present.

Full frame machine prediction
Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
