Abstract
Publié en 1848, le Traité élémentaire de calcul différentiel et de calcul intégral de Jean Langevin est un travail peu connu. Premier manuel canadien destiné à l’enseignement des mathématiques avancées, il n’avait jamais fait l’objet d’une analyse fouillée. Cette étude cherche à en déterminer les sources, la signification et la portée. Il importait de situer d’abord l’ouvrage dans le contexte de l’époque et dans le cadre du développement des mathématiques au Canada français. Le degré d’originalité de ce texte anonyme est ensuite évalué, avant que ne soit abordée la difficile question de son auditoire potentiel. Je conclus en notant sa faible postérité, car les années 1850 marquèrent un recul dans l’enseignement des sciences au Petit Séminaire de Québec, qui s’acheminait alors vers une forme d’orthodoxie philosophique et religieuse.
