Visant un double public, celui, immédiat, du lectorat antillais et celui, plus large, des lecteurs de langue française, Confiant s’adresse tout autant à un lecteur modèle, dont la fonction est de participer à l’élaboration des récits, d’en apprécier les enjeux, et avec lequel le narrateur-écrivain entretient une complicité de clins d’œil. Sa Trilogie tropicale/éditoriale, reproduisant la triade composée de l’écrivain et de ses publics, est une mise en évidence des enjeux institutionnels de la production littéraire en contexte francophone et de l’obligation faite au romancier de contribuer à sa propre édition critique, voire à sa propre défense et légitimation. Elle illustre de façon magistrale le rôle que joue la présence/absence du/des destinataire(s) à tous les niveaux d’une œuvre. Dans tous les cas, il s’agit de déjouer les habitudes de lecture, de déstabiliser ou de provoquer le lectorat tout en l’incluant, tout au moins de manière virtuelle, dans l’élaboration de l’œuvre. Travail d’équilibriste que doit accomplir le romancier entre une opacité consentie et la lisibilité indispensable à toute communication.
