Abstract Quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) is a modulation technique used for sending data over radio or cable networks. This article presents in detail the QPSK principle, as well as modulators and demodulators, using the conventional approach. A new concept to modulate or demodulate a QPSK signal using the six‐port circuit at microwave/millimeter‐wave frequencies is also presented. The coherent carrier‐recovery circuit for the demodulation of QPSK signals is an important aspect to be considered. Three regeneration schemes (Costas loop, multiplication loop, and reverse‐modulation loop) are presented. The probability of error for QPSK in the presence of noise is derived using the equations of I‐ and Q‐demodulated signals.
