Abstract
This chapter investigates political innovations and women’s political leadership for sustainable development on a local governance level, which has the least agency in driving transitions according to the literature. The case study explores the biography, leadership, and political innovations of Mayor Valérie Plante and her Projet Montréal-led administration in the city of Montréal, Canada. First, the chapter touches upon the structural conditions Valérie Plante faced, and the structural factors that influenced her actions. It further sheds light on her leadership style, personality, competencies, and finally, how structure and agency variables made her succeed in implementing political innovations for local sustainable development.
