Abstract
missionários desta ordem religiosa, no entanto, não ficaram restritos às atividades religiosas, e muitos deles se dedicaram à medicina, ao ensino, ao estudo de outras áreas como a filosofia e, ainda, à observação da natureza. Essas atividades eram de extrema importância para identificação de novas plantas e animais, a expansão do conhecimento geográfico dos territórios americanos em que atuavam como missionários e a identificação das possibilidades de exploração econômica. Foi observando a natureza que o jesuíta José Sánchez Labrador escreveu a obra Paraguay Natural Ilustrado, que será analisada no presente trabalho. Nela, além podermos identificar as impressões do autor sobre a natureza americana, baseadas em pressupostos religiosos e científicos do século XVIII, pode-se constatar seu empenho em descrever como os indígenas se relacionavam com a fauna, a flora e com os demais recursos naturais. Neste artigo, enfocamos, especialmente, as descrições das características e dos diferentes usos que os indígenas faziam dos recursos hídricos existentes na Província Jesuítica do Paraguai, que, em sua extensão, abrangia também o território que hoje denominamos de Paraguai.
