Cet article interroge l’ambiguïté esthétique des oeuvres musicales qui réutilisent des hymnes nationaux. Il commence par établir le caractère évolutif des chants patriotiques, sujets à de constantes réactualisations, puis retrace l’émergence de La Marseillaise et de la version reggae de Gainsbourg, qui sert d’exemple, pour cerner les spécificités de leurs symboliques contrastées. L’étude de cas se conclut par une réflexion sur l’usage du document patriotique chez Gainsbourg et sur le type d’oeuvre qui en résulte.
