First-in-Canada Use of Novel Heart Preservation System

Abstract
Organ preservation systems have the potential to significantly impact heart transplant outcomes, including the risk of primary graft dysfunction (PGD) in the early post-transplant period. Current standard of care in heart organ preservation in Canada is static cold storage (SCS) of donor hearts. Newer strategies for organ preservation have recently been developed, including static controlled hypothermia (SCH) as well as machine perfusion (MP). This case report illustrates the first-in-Canada use of the Traferox X-Port system (Traferox Technologies, Inc, Mississauga, ON), a novel SCH system for heart allograft preservation and transportation in the setting of cardiac transplantation.
