Abstract
Significance Freeland’s resignation poses the single greatest challenge to Trudeau’s position as Liberal leader since he became prime minister in 2015. He now faces growing calls to resign so that the party it can fight next year’s election with a new leader. Impacts The NDP hopes to benefit from a Liberal collapse by consolidating progressive opposition to the expected Conservative government. The Bloc Quebecois may become the main opposition after the next election if a strong NDP splits the centre-left vote with the Liberals. The Conservatives would rather fight the next election against the unpopular Trudeau than a new Liberal leader, but should win regardless. Donald Trump will welcome Trudeau’s fall, which he has already encouraged, but will not treat a Conservative government much differently.
