Abstract
Abstract John Hawkins gave up his career in slaving and took up a new one updating the Royal Navy for Queen Elizabeth. Francis Drake took the lead pirating in the Caribbean. He took out four voyages in the first half of the new decade, and Ingram was employed on one or two of the later ones. Ingram might also have served on Martin Frobisher’s search for a Northwest Passage, but there is no convincing evidence. John White’s portraits of three Inuit captives in 1577 was among the few notable outcomes of these voyages. David Ingram and Richard Browne were certainly with Francis Drake on the first part of his 1577–1580 voyage around the world. Browne died accidentally on their ship, the Elizabeth, before Captain Wynter gave up and turned back to England. This left Drake to sail a lone ship, The Golden Hind, across the Pacific and home. The decade ended with Humphrey Gilbert’s efforts to plant an English colony at or near the mythical Norumbega on the Penobscot River.
