La Organización Internacional de Turismo Social (ISTO) tiene como misión principal promover el desarrollo de un turismo para todos, solidario y sostenible. En el marco de la celebración de sus sesenta años en 2023, se presentó un nuevo texto de referencia sobre la sostenibilidad social del turismo. Ese texto, que constituye la segunda Adenda a la Declaración de Montreal por una visión social y humanista del turismo, adoptada en 1996, afirma que la sostenibilidad social del turismo es el punto central que actúa como elemento de palanca para activar los otros dos pilares; el económico y el medioambiental. La Adenda presenta una definición de lo que se entiende por sostenibilidad social de turismo, los criterios de su evaluación subdivididos en cinco grandes categorías así como los compromisos de ISTO. La evolución de ese trabajo, que involucra a todos los actores del sector turístico, refleja la importancia para dar prioridad a un turismo cualitativo que beneficia a todas las partes. En resumen, el artículo presenta una definición y los ámbitos de acción de la sostenibilidad social en turismo, así como una propuesta de indicadores por cada uno de ellos.
