Abstract
El artículo aborda la visión que sobre José Enrique Rodó tenían los uruguayos a mediados del siglo XX a partir de la investigación realizada en la prensa sobre la recepción que tuvo el monumento homenaje al escritor ubicado en el Parque Rodó en el momento en que se inauguró, el 27 de febrero de 1947. Recoge las ideas sobre y de Rodó que expresaron los periodistas, los políticos e integrantes de distintas organizaciones sociales y reflexiona sobre la función que le atribuían al monumento en el espacio público, de la materialización de las conmemoraciones como lugares de memoria y de construcción de la identidad.
