In many parts of the world, breast cancer is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality among women and it is the major cause of cancer death, next only to lung cancer. Despite significant progress on mammographic techniques for breast imaging and cancer detection, limitations do persist and other alternative methods such as magnetic resonance imaging have been explored. The motivation of this work is to propose the use of alternative focusing methods when using microwave imaging, a technique that has shown promising results. We show results obtained using conventional ground penetrating radar techniques that the authors have explored recently using a phantom that mimics breast and cancer tissue. We have reformulated the problem so that the scanning occurs in a circular path with a set of N antennas that surrounds the target in order to follow a more natural shape of the breast. In this way, scatterers are illuminated most of the time and focusing can be performed in such a way that the coherent summation in a SAR technique yields a high resolution image.
