The article examines the process of maintaining the career self-determination of schoolchildren from 1980s to the 1st quarter of the XXI century. The data presented on the formation and development process in foreign, Soviet and post-Soviet school practice and pedagogy and introduced key cases of the genesis of the problem of career self-determination of schoolchildren contribute to the detection of the trends and prospects for further development of the modern system of school career guidance.
