Accessibility, usability and universal design across fitness and recreational facilities: a rapid review

Physical activity domains present numerous barriers that restrict diverse people from engaging in active lifestyles. Accessibility, usability and universal design (UD) are concepts that may be leveraged to create environments that enable all users to participate in physical activity. However, a paucity of research has examined these concepts in fitness and recreational facilities. A rapid review was conducted to contextualize research exploring accessibility, usability and UD in fitness and recreational facilities and synthesize factors that may inform design. Eleven databases related to architecture and health or socio-behavioural sciences were searched, yielding 54 articles from 10 countries that met eligibility criteria. Perspectives of facility users and/or staff were represented in 15 articles. Six articles defined the facility setting; none defined accessibility. Forty-six facilitators and 33 barriers were identified. Overall, this rapid review contributed knowledge that may be used to develop more accessible, usable and universally designed fitness and recreational facilities.
