Abstract
Exiled in England, liberal militiaman in San Sebastian, attaché at the headquarters of the Commander of the British Legion, interpreter for the British delegation during the first Carlist civil war and agent during the negotiations of the Treaty of Bergara to end the war in the Basque Country. He was in favour of Foral Basque Constitution. Merchant and partner in the firm E. Mickle and Company (1850) in San Francisco (California) He was appointed Consul of Spain for San Francisco on 2/6/1851 and later Consul of Parma for the State of California.(1853). From 1864 onwards he became a professional diplomat, serving as Spanish Consul in Newcastle, Algiers, Montreal, New York and London. He received the “title of the realm” Baron de Satrustegui in 1876. J.M. Satrustegui was, also, an other archetypal Basque emigrant: He had a solid professional training, took part in different business enterprises and became a functionary of the bureaucratic structure of the Spanish nation-state, following the path of the liberal group and lobby from San Sebastian. Founding partner of the Lopez y Cia shipping company (1857).
