Pyrophoric Ignition Hazards in Refining and Chemical Plants

Abstract
This chapter covers the hazards of pyrophoric materials in refining and chemical plant operations, the chemistry of pyrophoric material, and the expected reaction with air, for example, when opening process equipment. It also reviews examples of where pyrophoric materials may be found in our plants and covers incidents involving the ignition from pyrophoric materials. As in prior chapters, the lessons learned from these incidents are discussed along with methods and practices to minimize the potential for ignition of pyrophoric materials. Due to the extreme nature of these incidents, special focus is on the potential ignition of tower or vessel internals such as trays and metal packing. One such incident occurred at the Sarnia, Canada refinery when vessel internals ignited shortly after the tower was opened for maintenance. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries; however, the tower collapsed due to the overheating of the vessel shell. This chapter is designed to make managers, supervisors, and operators aware of these hazards, especially those who may be assigned to unit turnaround activities. Included in this chapter are a series of procedures and precautions designed to help prevent this kind of incident from happening on their equipment. Most of these are simple to follow; however, they must be followed, or this kind of event can occur.
