La Insuficiencia Hepática Aguda (IHA) es un síndrome caracterizado por un deterioro grave de la función hepática en pacientes sin antecedentes de enfermedad hepática crónica (Kwong et al., 2019; Maiwall et al., 2024). En la mayoría de los casos, se produce una necrosis masiva de hepatocitos, aunque en patologías como el hígado graso agudo del embarazo, se pueden identificar otros hallazgos específicos como esteatosis microvesicular difusa con disfunción mitocondrial severa. Aunque la IHA es una entidad poco frequente en la población general, es una patología de gran importancia dada su elevada mortalidad, siendo el manejo de soporte en las unidades de paciente crítico y el trasplante hepático sus principales estrategias terapéuticas (Kwong et al., 2019).
