Unveiling the Localized Surface Plasmon-Er<sup>3+</sup> Coupling in the Near-Infrared Emission at Low Temperatures

Abstract
The coupling between rare-earth ions and localized surface plasmons has been recently investigated, especially under controlled temperature. This research explores the quantum-plasmonic behavior in Au nanoparticles embedded in <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{Er}^{3+}$</tex> -tellurite glasses. The <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{Er}^{3+}$</tex> emission at 1536 nm is analyzed, and a significant enhancement of the FWHM and the emission intensities are obtained. Such enhancements result from the improvement of the localized surface plasmon and <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\mathbf{Er}^{3+}$</tex> coupling since, under cooling conditions, the plasmon modes expand, increasing the local field enhancement.
